1. What is hot-stamping?
Hot-stamping on bags is a technique for refining paper bags in which a foil (e.g. gold, silver, holographic) is transferred to the surface of the bag under the influence of temperature and pressure. A metallic, very contrasting effect is created, unavailable with traditional paints. Unlike printing, the foil layer is opaque, so it covers dark papers perfectly.
2. When is it worth using?
- Premium & events: premieres, VIP, boutiques, jewelers – when the "wow effect" counts.
- Monocolor characters: logos with a simple shape, simple elements, short slogans – they look best in foil.
- Dark papers and laminates: the foil covers and shines where the paint could "fade out".
- Point additions: boosting a key element (e.g. logo, frame), without reloading the design.
Pro tip: if your identification allows for minimalism, it's worth considering only hot-stamping without backing printing – fewer elements, greater readability and lower preparation costs.
3. What is the cost?
- Stamp (matrix): one-time cost of preparing the film/matrix depending on the size, degree of detail and thickness. Most often billed in cm².
- Foil printing area: the larger the hot-stamping field, the longer the stamping time and the greater the foil consumption.
- Foil type: standard (gold/silver) vs. special (copper, rose gold, holograms, metallic matt) – surcharges 10-40%.
- Bag base and finish: kraft paper vs. chalk + gloss/matt laminate; laminates improve reflection evenness.
- Circulation and format: economies of scale – unit price falls at higher quantities; larger formats require larger working fields.
- Number of strokes: logos on two sides are usually separate machine passes.
4. Example price ranges
Matrix: small logo (up to ~25 cm²) – approximately PLN 220-420 net; medium (25–60 cm²) – PLN 420–690; large (60–120 cm²) – PLN 790–990.
Hot-stamping surcharge added to the bag price: for a quantity of 100–300 pcs.: ~PLN 1.50–3.50/pcs.; 300–1000 pcs.: ~PLN 0.90–1.90/pcs.; over 1000 pcs.: ~PLN 0.50–1.20/pcs. Special foils +10–40%.
Two Pages / Two Beats: add 40-80% to unit surcharge, depending on field and settings.

5. Printable files and technical limitations
- Input: PDF/EPS/SVG vector, curves, no raster gradients.
- Minimum lines and spacing: usually ≥0.2–0.3 mm; avoid microtext and applications with complex perforations.
- Color registration: predict registration characters; For matt laminate, spot varnish is recommended pod foil for perfect flatness.
- Safety margins: keep a distance from the edges of creases/handles min. 8–12 mm to avoid cracking and "piercing".
Unsure about a detail? Send the file – we will advise on the acceptable level of simplification and, if necessary, proof on the target material.
6. Minimum outlays and logistics
Typical production minimum for hot-stamped bags starts at 50–100 pcs, but the most cost-effective thresholds are 250+ and 500+ pcs. The turnaround time is usually about 20 working days depending on the complexity of the project. For repeats you do not pay again for the die, as long as the design has not changed.
7. Alternatives and Combining Techniques
- Hot-stamping + dry stamp (emboss/deboss): combines gloss and relief – exceptionally premium.
- Matte colored foil: subtle, non-shiny metallic – elegance without "shouting".
- Metallic screen printing: cheaper in small runs, but less "mirror-like" effect.
- 3D UV Varnish: emphasizes an element without a metallic look; great on matte laminates.
8. Summary
If you care about maximum elegance and brand recognition, Hot-stamping on paper bags it gives an effect that cannot be replicated: deep gloss, perfect coverage, and durability. It makes the most sense for medium and larger runs, simpler logos, and colored or laminated papers. To choose the optimal foil and limit the cost of the die, consult your file with the manufacturer – this guarantees flawless production and predictable pricing. Want to see samples and compare foils?
